On An On Drop “Give In” on January 29, Announce Tour Dates

On An OnOn An On will release their debut album, Give In, on January 29, 2013 via Roll Call Records. The culmination of a long and precarious, but ultimately rewarding journey, Give In was recorded with producer Dave Newfeld, known for his work on Broken Social Scene’s seminal album, You Forgot It In People, as well as records from Super Furry Animals and Los Campesinos. To announce the news, On An On have released the music video for their lead single “Ghosts.” Upcoming tour dates are listed below.

The Chicago and Minneapolis based trio that make up On An On (Nate Eiesland, Alissa Ricci, and Ryne Estwing) had played music with one another in various capacities for the better part of a decade. Most recently, they had shared the stage and studio as three fifths of the indie-pop outfit Scattered Trees. With the band’s studio time only a few weeks away and the other members now spread out across the country pursuing other endeavors, the three of them would face a crossroads. They could cancel plans and re-group, or scrap their current material and push ahead into the unknown, writing and recording in a completely new capacity as On An On. They took the plunge and went ahead with recording, starting entirely from scratch.

According to Eiesland, the sessions were something of an exorcism: “We really wanted to get away from the sterility of our previous approach to recording.” They embraced musical risks that in the past it might have shied away from. In the studio, the band members explored a natural chemistry and honed their sound; synthesizers, scattershot electro beats and ambient ear candy gave guitars, bass and drums a ghostly sheen.

After smashing everything they knew to pieces, they pulled themselves together around Give In, On An On’s ten-track debut album – a dream-washed textural journey armed with a biting perspective on life, love, and the commonality of loss.

New West End Motel Album and Tour Dates

Mastodon guitarist, Brent Hinds, has just announced a three-week tour with his side project, West End Motel in support of their sophomore release Only Time Can Tell (out October 30th on Warner Bros). Kicking off November 28 in Washington, D.C., the tour will make stops in New York, Boston, Chicago, and more, wrapping up December 15th in Hinds’ hometown of Atlanta.

Only Time Can Tell is the highly-anticipated follow-up to Hinds’ acclaimed 2011 debut, Don’t Shiver, You’re A Winner. The 8-song set is now available to preoder on iTunes. You can check out the single,”Burn It Down,” right here.

West End Motel began in 1993 under a bridge in Atlanta, where Hinds first met longtime friend Tom Cheshire. Describing themselves as a “conglomerate of losers, poets and hobo-sexuals,” the pair write acoustic-guitar driven songs enriched with horns and keys, with the end result sounding like Nick Cave fronting Gogol Bordello. The project pre-dates Mastodon and offers an important glimpse into Hinds’ musical influences.

“I grew up listening to Chet Atkins play guitar, and I grew up listening to Brian Setzer play guitar,” explains Hinds. “Jimmy Bryant, Speedy West, all these country-chicken-pickin’-flying-’round-the-guitar-neck guitar players. I got really inspired by it. I’m from way down in the country. It was pretty common to have the interests I had when I was that age. MTV had some hair metal on there, but I was more interested in this rockabilly vibe. Stray Cats were really big at the time, in the ’80s. It was epic.”

James Iha Premieres New Album on Team Coco

James Iha
James Iha is premiering his new solo album, Look To Sky – an exciting collection of sophisticated pop melodies, lyrical sharpness and guitar driven rock – on Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco a week before its September 18th release.

Fans can listen to the record beginning today here.

Look To Sky sees Iha returning as a solo artist after nearly a decade and a half, newly inspired, a little wiser and proud to share what he’s learned and created. “I feel like everything should lead up to something and this is a culmination of my journey”

Perhaps best known as a co-founding member and longtime guitarist for Smashing Pumpkins, Iha has gathered musical depth and craftsmanship inspired by his many bands (A Perfect Circle, Tinted Windows) as well as his production work (Cat Power, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs), to create this new album that offers listeners a wide range of sounds that touch upon each aspect of James’ impressive career.

Songs such as “Speed Of Love” “Gemini” and “To Who Knows Where,” three of the ten impressive tracks that tie together Iha’s diverse and stylistic career, showcase his talents as a musician, songwriter, lyricist, arranger, and producer.

Look To Sky was produced by Iha and Nathan Larson of Shudder To Think and features special guests Karen O and Nick Zinner of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara, Nina Persson of the Cardigans, Fountain Of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger and Tom Verlaine, frontman of New York rock band Television.

“I like the idea of that feeling you have when you’re young and you’re lying in the grass and looking up at the sky, and you get that feeling of how big the world is” says Iha. “It’s a very cinematic moment that captured the overall feel of the album to me. Also, the title sounded like a phrase you’d hear in a ’50s B-movie, like a directive: ‘The aliens are coming. Look to the sky.’ I mean it from the point of view of, ‘Look all around you. Here’s this incredible world we’re in and there are all these beautiful things happening.’”

After a successful performance at this year’s Fuji Rock Festival, Iha will return to Japan this September for a run of tour dates followed by a string of East Coast US shows.

I Am King Sign with Velocity/Rise Records

I Am King
Pennsylvania post-hardcore 6-piece I Am King has signed with Velocity/Rise Records. Formed out of the Lehigh Valley in early 2010, I Am King humbly offers a message of truth and hope with their music, while reminding their listeners the harsh reality of choosing to face both the truth and yourself. The band’s self-titled and self-released EP dropped last month and was recorded with Taylor Larson (Periphery, Sky Eats Airplane, I the Breather). The band will enter the studio later this year to record their label debut with an anticipated release in spring 2013.

“The first time I heard I Am King, I instantly knew there was something special about them. I’ll never forget that first show i saw them at (Starland Ballroom). I knew it wasn’t just studio magic, but that it was real. What they had was authentic and genuine. I see nothing but amazing things in their future,” says Velocity Records founder Dave Shapiro.

Co-vocalist Sam Sky says, “From the beginning, we had our eye on Velocity and now we have Dave Shapiro behind us along with Rise. It’s a dream come true for us. We’re really blessed and stoked to have this opportunity and to have such an awesome team behind us. Thank you to everyone who has supported us up until this point. We promise not to let you down”

I Am King will be on the road this fall playing select shows with Assassins, Chiodos, The Word Alive, Pierce The Veil, We Came as Romans and more.

Fang Island Announce Co-Headling Tour with Anamanaguchi in October

Fang Island
Brooklyn’s beloved guitar-anthem optimists, Fang Island, announce co-headlining Midwestern tour dates with Anamanaguchi starting in October, followed by the band’s performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX on November 4th. Complete dates are listed below.

Like the painstakingly chiseled marble of the album artwork, the band’s sophomore effort, Major, is hefty, solid, monolithic and regal. Whereas Fang Island described their celebrated 2010 self-titled Sargent House debut as, “everyone high-fiving everyone,” Major is evermore confident, triumphant and brimming with infectious enthusiasm. Its warm harmonies are given proper berth with more expansive dynamics and focused pop song craft.

“One of our core ideas has always been that our songs would be all of your favorite parts of the song that other bands make you wait eight minutes to get to,” explains guitarist/vocalist Jason Bartell. “We wanted to be the band that’s nothing but your favorite hooks back to back.” Major shows Fang Island deftly achieving that aim.

Throughout, Major highlights the band’s endeavor to elevate positivity as an art form. “It’s kind of similar to writing songs about being sad,” Bartell says. “It can come across as simplistic, or easy. Positive songs often run the risk of sounding shallow, but we feel there are a lot of shades and depths to positivity that can be explored.” That exploration becomes clear from the first notes of Major, which was released everywhere on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on July 24th, 2012.

Keller Williams Announces Fall Tour, End of the World Party, and More

Keller WilliamsKeller Williams has unveiled an upcoming season jam-packed with shows – performing both solo and with his myriad of collaborations – and several dates loaded with very special guests. In late December, Keller & Friends host an “End of the World Party” in Keystone, CO on the 21st and – yes – the 22nd of December. For New Year’s Eve, Keller joins with Del McCoury and the The Travelin’ McCourys in their hometown of Nashville, TN for an end of year bash.

Earlier in the season, Keller is all over the Eastern half of the country, hitting more than 30 cities in more than 20 states. The complete list of Keller’s confirmed dates is included below.

With the Mayan calendar coming to an ominous halt on 12/21, 2012 — many are preparing for the End of Days. Keller Williams & Friends plan to celebrate with an “End of the World Party” in Keystone, CO on 12/21 and 12/22 (fret not, Keller is promising full refunds for the second show should the world, in fact, end). Longtime musical friends – The String Cheese Incident’s Keith Moseley,Bill Nershi, and Kyle Hollingsworth. The Motet’s Dave Watts, and others – will join Keller for the special occasion.

Following the “End of the World Party,” Keller hosts a massive five-night run to ring in the New Year. Performing a solo set and a second set with his brand new R&B collaboration dubbed “Keller Williams with More than a Little,” and joined by That 1 Guy to open each show, the run makes four stops along the mid-Atlantic coast — Wilmington, NC; Charlotte, NC; Norfolk, VA; and Richmond, VA. The year culminates with a New Year’s Eve extravaganza in Nashville, TN with Keller solo, Del McCoury Band, and Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys.

Fans still have time to enter Keller’s Pick Me! contest. Those who order Pick, the debut collaboration of Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys, by 10/1 through Keller’s online merch store automatically get an entry to the contest. One lucky winner will win VIP tickets and an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Nashville to hang with Keller and the McCoury clan at their 2012 New Year’s Eve event. Details are available at http://www.kellerwilliams.net.

The critically lauded album, Pick, from Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys was released in July 2012. Pick is a classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts—although the parts are rather massive on their own, to be sure. Recorded at Nashville’s famed Butcher Shoppe studios, the album’s dozen songs (both originals and covers) fully realize Americana music’s long storytelling tradition, and the impeccable musicianship displayed on Pick captures all of the heart and heartache of the bluegrass genre—and then some: Williams’ unconventional songwriting takes on even greater weight when backed by The Travelin’ McCourys’ emotive tones. Inspired by Keller’s fearless creativity, The Travelin’ McCourys’ flawless playing gains new depth.

Deftones to Drop Koi No Yokan On 11/13

Deftones

Grammy-winning alternative rock band, Deftones, have announced the November 13th release of their seventh studio album titled Koi No Yokan. To support the release they will hit the road on a nationwide headlining tour, with special guest Scars On Broadway, which kicks off October 9th in Ventura, CA and will conclude on the West Coast in mid-November.

Koi No Yokan was recorded in Los Angeles, CA with Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Rush) who also produced Diamond Eyes. Frontman, Chino Moreno, summed up Deftones’ sound in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying “Obviously we’re an aggressive band – not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack.” He continues, “But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.”

From their 1994 debut, Adrenaline, to their platinum-certified, Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-winning breakthrough album, White Pony, Deftones have continually crossed-over genres, defied categorization and delivered compelling live performances around the world.

Down Returns With New EP on September 18th with Tour Dates

Down

Metal forerunners Down will release Down IV Part I – The Purple EP, their first body of new material in five years, on September 18, 2012 via Down Records/Independent Label Group. RollingStone.com made the exclusive announcement this week with the world-premiere of first single “Witchtripper,” calling it a “typically aggressive Anselmo vocal against a twisting, grinding musical backdrop.” Adding further excitement to news of the upcoming release, Sirius XM Radio’s “Liquid Metal” also premiered the new single “Witchtripper” and “Misfortune Teller” to radio airwaves this week.

The six song EP is the first in a series of four EP’s planned for release over the next year. Down, which includes Philip Anselmo (Pantera) on vocals, Pepper Keenan (C.O.C.) on lead guitars, Kirk Windstein (Crowbar) on guitar, Jimmy Bowery (Eye Hate God) on drums, and Pat Brudners (Crowbar), the newest addition to the line-up, on bass, will kick off a string of tour dates on release day, beginning in Fort Worth, TX, and ending October 2 in Charlotte, NC.

Self-produced and recorded at Nodfertu’s Lair, located at Anselmo’s New Orleans home, Down IV Part I – The Purple EP is undeniably the product of the iconic collective that is Down, whose members origins span from Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Eyehategod. Staggering riffs, thunderous drums, and Anselmo’s inimitable delivery crush and captivate over the course of the collection’s six songs. It’s dark. It’s dangerous. It’s decisive. It’s Down at their best.

“I do believe that we have delivered a record that will be accepted and hopefully enjoyed by the Down horde – if you will,” says Anselmo. “If you’re looking for a Down record, it’s very pure and real.”

Lyrically, the EP goes beyond just personal experiences, and explores themes that include the faith of mankind, the imperfection of mankind and cultural belief systems.

“Down gives me the platform to be poetic and paint imagery with lyrics,” says Anselmo. “That’s the approach I took. They complement the music and create an ominous feeling. Ultimately, when people consume the words, it’s always their interpretation that matters. I could be image-conscious though when I wrote. It’s not so gut level or street. The darker shit is some of my favorite.”

With an album sales history totaling over 725,000, these New Orleans natives are no strangers to success. Their legendary 1995 debut Nola is certified platinum, while Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow (2002) and Down III (2007) remain fan and critical successes.

Down IV Part I – The Purple EP Track Listing:
