I Am King Sign with Velocity/Rise Records

I Am King
Pennsylvania post-hardcore 6-piece I Am King has signed with Velocity/Rise Records. Formed out of the Lehigh Valley in early 2010, I Am King humbly offers a message of truth and hope with their music, while reminding their listeners the harsh reality of choosing to face both the truth and yourself. The band’s self-titled and self-released EP dropped last month and was recorded with Taylor Larson (Periphery, Sky Eats Airplane, I the Breather). The band will enter the studio later this year to record their label debut with an anticipated release in spring 2013.

“The first time I heard I Am King, I instantly knew there was something special about them. I’ll never forget that first show i saw them at (Starland Ballroom). I knew it wasn’t just studio magic, but that it was real. What they had was authentic and genuine. I see nothing but amazing things in their future,” says Velocity Records founder Dave Shapiro.

Co-vocalist Sam Sky says, “From the beginning, we had our eye on Velocity and now we have Dave Shapiro behind us along with Rise. It’s a dream come true for us. We’re really blessed and stoked to have this opportunity and to have such an awesome team behind us. Thank you to everyone who has supported us up until this point. We promise not to let you down”

I Am King will be on the road this fall playing select shows with Assassins, Chiodos, The Word Alive, Pierce The Veil, We Came as Romans and more.

Fang Island Announce Co-Headling Tour with Anamanaguchi in October

Fang Island
Brooklyn’s beloved guitar-anthem optimists, Fang Island, announce co-headlining Midwestern tour dates with Anamanaguchi starting in October, followed by the band’s performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX on November 4th. Complete dates are listed below.

Like the painstakingly chiseled marble of the album artwork, the band’s sophomore effort, Major, is hefty, solid, monolithic and regal. Whereas Fang Island described their celebrated 2010 self-titled Sargent House debut as, “everyone high-fiving everyone,” Major is evermore confident, triumphant and brimming with infectious enthusiasm. Its warm harmonies are given proper berth with more expansive dynamics and focused pop song craft.

“One of our core ideas has always been that our songs would be all of your favorite parts of the song that other bands make you wait eight minutes to get to,” explains guitarist/vocalist Jason Bartell. “We wanted to be the band that’s nothing but your favorite hooks back to back.” Major shows Fang Island deftly achieving that aim.

Throughout, Major highlights the band’s endeavor to elevate positivity as an art form. “It’s kind of similar to writing songs about being sad,” Bartell says. “It can come across as simplistic, or easy. Positive songs often run the risk of sounding shallow, but we feel there are a lot of shades and depths to positivity that can be explored.” That exploration becomes clear from the first notes of Major, which was released everywhere on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on July 24th, 2012.

Five Albums That Changed My Life with Chris McFarland

Chris McFarland
Originally from Austin, “angry folk” singer, Chris McFarland calls Brooklyn home these days… when he is home, that is. The veteran musician is regularly criss-crossing the country supporting his unique brand of visceral folk music, which includes his latest EP, Beauty and Undertow. We were fortunate enough to grab a few minutes of his time and it turned into one of the more eclectic Five Albums interviews we’ve done yet.

Without further ado, then, we preset Five Albums that Changed Chris McFarland’s Life.

Buffalo Tom – Birdbrain: I completely absorbed this album when it came out. It was the first thing that I loved sonically while also feeling as if it resembled things I was writing. I still hear its influence in what I write today, and Bill Janovitz is still a songwriting hero of mine. Tracks like “Skeleton Key” and “Fortune Teller” became a roadmap for how to craft my lyrics around a musical idea while keeping the chord changes from getting excessive.

Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures: There’s no shortage of flattering things that can be said about this masterpiece of a record; it creates and cradles a mood that never fully changes shape. Ian Curtis’s vulnerability is displayed on every single track, and the bass tone is just perfect. I would listen to this record on repeat for hours while scribbling away in my journal like a true angst-ridden teen.

Anthrax – Among The Living: For a long time, I dreamed exclusively of being in a metal band, and this is what we sounded like in my head. I could play all the riffs and gallop on my E string, but when it came to writing in that style I always drew a blank. I still dream of having a metal band, and every time I pick up an electric guitar something from this record comes out of it.

Ryan Adams – Gold: This defined the modern singer/songwriter for me. I was a casual Whiskeytown town fan, but this album solidified my stance on Ryan. His vocals are so tender, and he delivers them in such a way that they seemed meant just for you. “Harder Now That It’s Over” is the heartslayer, all while maintaining just enough playfulness to give you hope.

Hayden – Everything I Long For: I’m continually amazed that Hayden is not a household name. Although this record still has the feel of a demo in certain parts, I immediately felt like I was hearing something special. I couldn’t remember anyone before taking things that I loved about bands like Beat Happening, songwriters like Neil Young and Springsteen, and cramming them into a Lo-Fi benchmark. The howl and flat vocal, the rhyme scheme, the dirty acoustic guitars that were barely hanging on to the tuning they were placed in. The simple storytelling was inspirational.

If you are curious to hear how all these influences come together in McFarland’s work, check out “Simple Selfish Plan” from Beauty and Undertow.

Mudhoney Live in Berlin DVD to Drop on November 13th

Mudhoney Live in Berlin 1988On November 13th, !K7 Records will release Mudhoney: Live In Berlin, 1988 on DVD. The footage, filmed by a professional camera crew at 1988′s Berlin Independent Days festival and only recently rediscovered, captures the Seattle Grunge pioneers’ first ever performance on foreign soil. Playing as representatives of Sub Pop Records to a crowd of curious punters, critics and members of Europe’s independent music community, the show was also the first grunge gig in Europe, laying essential groundwork for the genre’s subsequent global domination.

Besides its historical importance, Mudhoney: Live In Berlin, 1988 presents one of the greatest rock’n'roll groups of all time at their very best, a glorious mess of flailed hair, acidic caterwaul, gnarly riffage and fried guitar skronk as Mudhoney tear through material from their epochal (but then-unreleased) Superfuzz Bigmuff EP and eponymous debut album.

Wild, thrilling, and funny, much like Mudhoney themselves, the performance captures an unguarded moment for the band, removed from the expectations and hyperbole that would later accompany the grunge movement they unwittingly helped kick off. “We couldn’t understand quite why this was happening, why ours was the band that was flying out, or what was going on,” remembers Mudhoney vocalist and guitarist, Mark Arm. “We’d only played Portland, outside of Seattle, at that point,” says Arm. “And to be flown out to Berlin to play a show, at that point, seemed almost like a joke to us.” Little did they know they know their off-the-cuff performance, enlightening and eye opening for the industry professionals in attendance, would have such long standing consequences in Rock ‘n’ Roll history.

A testament to the enduring vitality of the independent music scene, the release happens along side the 27th anniversary of !K7, a Berlin-based independent label and distributor with offices in New York and London, and an internationally renowned purveyor of electronic music in particular. In its early days, !K7 also served as a video production company run by label-owner, Horst Weidenmüller, whose crew filmed a number of performances from that year’s Berlin Independent Days festival. Weidenmüller recently rediscovered the Mudhoney footage, realizing that he held in his hands a crucial rock ‘n’ roll document that had to be shared with the world.

Keller Williams Announces Fall Tour, End of the World Party, and More

Keller WilliamsKeller Williams has unveiled an upcoming season jam-packed with shows – performing both solo and with his myriad of collaborations – and several dates loaded with very special guests. In late December, Keller & Friends host an “End of the World Party” in Keystone, CO on the 21st and – yes – the 22nd of December. For New Year’s Eve, Keller joins with Del McCoury and the The Travelin’ McCourys in their hometown of Nashville, TN for an end of year bash.

Earlier in the season, Keller is all over the Eastern half of the country, hitting more than 30 cities in more than 20 states. The complete list of Keller’s confirmed dates is included below.

With the Mayan calendar coming to an ominous halt on 12/21, 2012 — many are preparing for the End of Days. Keller Williams & Friends plan to celebrate with an “End of the World Party” in Keystone, CO on 12/21 and 12/22 (fret not, Keller is promising full refunds for the second show should the world, in fact, end). Longtime musical friends – The String Cheese Incident’s Keith Moseley,Bill Nershi, and Kyle Hollingsworth. The Motet’s Dave Watts, and others – will join Keller for the special occasion.

Following the “End of the World Party,” Keller hosts a massive five-night run to ring in the New Year. Performing a solo set and a second set with his brand new R&B collaboration dubbed “Keller Williams with More than a Little,” and joined by That 1 Guy to open each show, the run makes four stops along the mid-Atlantic coast — Wilmington, NC; Charlotte, NC; Norfolk, VA; and Richmond, VA. The year culminates with a New Year’s Eve extravaganza in Nashville, TN with Keller solo, Del McCoury Band, and Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys.

Fans still have time to enter Keller’s Pick Me! contest. Those who order Pick, the debut collaboration of Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys, by 10/1 through Keller’s online merch store automatically get an entry to the contest. One lucky winner will win VIP tickets and an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Nashville to hang with Keller and the McCoury clan at their 2012 New Year’s Eve event. Details are available at http://www.kellerwilliams.net.

The critically lauded album, Pick, from Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys was released in July 2012. Pick is a classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts—although the parts are rather massive on their own, to be sure. Recorded at Nashville’s famed Butcher Shoppe studios, the album’s dozen songs (both originals and covers) fully realize Americana music’s long storytelling tradition, and the impeccable musicianship displayed on Pick captures all of the heart and heartache of the bluegrass genre—and then some: Williams’ unconventional songwriting takes on even greater weight when backed by The Travelin’ McCourys’ emotive tones. Inspired by Keller’s fearless creativity, The Travelin’ McCourys’ flawless playing gains new depth.

To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.”

Dressy Bessy Releases Second Edition of “Summer Singles” series, “Something To Love.”

As promised, Denver-based indie rock band Dressy Bessy is back with the second installment of its “Summer Singles” collection. Comprised of the songs “Something To Love” b/w “Wind Me Up”, volume two is available now via the band’s Bandcamp site at: http://dressybessy.bandcamp.com/album/summer-singles-volume-2. While Dressy Bessy is offering the single as a free download, donations are encouraged, as the band will forward all proceeds to Colorado wildfire relief organizations.

Dressy BessyDressy Bessy lead singer and guitarist, Tammy Ealom, along with lead guitarist John Hill (also of The Apples in Stereo), bass player Rob Greene, and drummer Craig Gilbert are having fun releasing a series of upbeat summer pop singles, but can’t help feeling a debt to their home state of Colorado. “We’re just torn up about all of the loss involved with the wildfires here, says Hill, adding, “We can’t raise as much as some, but hope that we serve as example and make the point that every dollar counts in this situation.”

The band also felt the need at this time to express its sadness over the untimely death last week of Bill Doss, a close friend, Hill’s Apples bandmate and co-founder of fellow Elephant 6 group The Olivia Tremor Control. In a post on Dressy Bessy’s Facebook page, the band stated, “We find ourselves torn about how to proceed after the passing of our good friend Bill Doss. Our new songs were finished before his passing, so it is not appropriate to specifically dedicate them to him, but we cannot let the passing of such a musical soul stop the music. If anything we’ll just turn the volume up to 11 and dance about in his honor. We love you Billy!”

Hill elaborates, “When you lose dear friends in an untimely manner, it really puts things in perspective, but I spent many hours, days, and weeks on the road with Bill and I know that he would want everything to continue as planned.” Ealom comments, “In my experience, the rock n’ roll world has always been a boys club, but Bill always made me feel included. He was very gracious and respectful of my role as a female songwriter and band leader and always went out of his way to let me know that. There are so many reasons we’ll miss him, but for me, I’ll really miss his charm, and will never forget how comfortable and vital he made me feel.”

Dressy Bessy recorded its last three albums in professional studios, 2003’s Dressy Bessy and 2005’s Electrified with Britt Myers (Chairlift, Yeasayer) and HollerandStomp with Trent Bell (Chainsaw Kittens, Starlight Mints, The Flaming Lips.) This time around, the band has gone back to its do-it-yourself roots. Hill and Ealom share recording duties and Ealom handles creating videos, artwork, and imagery as well. Essentially, the band is able to deliver a finished product without ever leaving the house! Dressy Bessy’s “Summer Singles” are available at dressybessy.com (where you can name your price), iTunes, and Amazon.com.
