Squarepusher Extends North American Tour

Squarepusher LiveDue to fan demand, Squarepusher is extending the east coast leg of his upcoming US tour. Until this spring when he performed at NYC’s Webster Hall and at the Creators Project San Francisco installment, Squarepusher had not played a show in the US in close to 8 years, and more than that for many of the cities he is headed to.

Squarepusher will be touring his “Ufabulum” project which encompasses both the recently released album and the live show. In contrast to most audio/visual presentations at this scale, everything was originally conceived, written, and designed by Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher), much of which was created from gear that he has designed and built himself. Each show features Squarepusher not only performing the music live, but also live producing the visuals making each show a unique experience for fans.

James Iha to Release Solo Album and New Song

James Iha

James Iha has announced the release of his new solo album Look To The Sky, out September 18th on The End Records. As a member of A Perfect Circle, the power pop super-group Tinted Windows, and of course, the Smashing Pumpkins, Iha has gathered musical depth and craftsmanship inspired by his many bands as well as his production work with The Sounds, Whiskeytown and Ladytron, to create a new album offering listeners sophisticated pop melodies, lyrical sharpness and guitar driven rock.

Produced by Iha and guitarist Nathan Larson (formerly of beloved indie rockers Shudder to Think) at Iha’s own studio Stratosphere Sound in New York City, the sessions for Look To The Sky were designed to create an atmosphere of freedom, experimentation and shared fondness for a variety of enduring genres: from bright, modern rock, to ’60s nuggets and cool, clean ’80s new wave.

“I wanted this record to be more eclectic and reflect all of my tastes, which is why it took so long,” Iha explains. “It was important to me for the record to be multi-dimensional and complex. Being a part of the Smashing Pumpkins, and working with so many other bands and artists since my last album [1998's solo debut Let It Come Down] gave me a fresh perspective on what music could be.”

This free and fun environment attracted friends and peers such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O and Nick Zinner, Tegan And Sara’s Sara Quin, Fountains Of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger, Antony & the Johnsons and legendary Television guitarist Tom Verlaine

“Working with all of these talented people helped the record evolve in great and unexpected ways.”

Look To The Sky sees Iha returning as a solo artist after nearly a decade and a half, newly inspired, a little wiser and proud to share what he’s learned and created. Says Iha, “I feel like everything should lead up to something and this is a culmination of my journey.”

Regarding the new tour he says, “As I’ve grown as an artist, I’ve gotten more and more in touch with my center, and that center is voice and guitar. Over time it has become increasingly vital to express more with less; that is my touchstone now, and the embodiment of that philosophy is what will be largely represented in the new show. Impending Doom Debuts Video for Deceiver

Impending Doom

Southern Californian metal band, Impending Doom, have debuted a brand new music video for their single “Deceiver”.

Lead singer Brook Reeves offers the band’s mindset in making this kind of video:

“This video is a representation of the filthiness of sin that ultimately leads to hell and that is doesn’t matter If someone calls themselves a Christian with their mouth if they are not producing fruit in their lives

“There are a lot of Christians out there who are fakes and will try and deceive you for power, money, or other lusts of the flesh especially in these last days. So it’s up to genuine, real, and courageous Christians to stand up and speak truth and not compromise.”

Impending Doom recently announced a batch of tour dates this summer. Kicking off on July 5th in Little Rock, dates will run along the south and south west. Support duties come from Within The Ruins, Molotov Solution, Erra and To Each HIs Own. They’ll end out the summer on the Scream It Like You Mean It tour alongside The Acacia Strain and Oceano. The band is currently finishing up dates on the 2012 Van’s Warped Tour.

The band released their latest record, Baptized in Filth in March. Produced by Andreas Magnusson and Machine, this is the bands fourth full length effort.

Five Albums That Changed My Life with Aileen Paron of Scarlet Season

Scarlet Season
After turning out one of the best albums of 2011 in the hauntingly beautiful The Taxidermist, Aileen Paron (aka Scarlet Season) has stayed busy with her hands in a variety of different musical project around Seattle. We, however, were able to corner her for just a few moments to find out five albums that changed her life. Here they are in her own words.

Depeche Mode, Violator: I was pretty sheltered as a kid in terms of music and movies. My parents were pretty strict about keeping me away from anything… naughty. When I first heard “Personal Jesus” (incidentally the first single I ever bought), I had this feeling of “Oh wow, my parents would freak if they knew I was listening to this!” There’s such forward sensuality in so much of DM’s music and especially Violator. I would wander the streets at night listening to that record over and over again.

Rolling Stones, Paint It, Black: I only had the single, but I have to include it because again, Whoa! My dad had a pretty great classic rock collection, which I began to pore through in my teens and this was one of the first jewels I came across. It said everything I was feeling at the time: that roiling sitar riff and insistent powerful beat made me feel sexy and angry at the same time. I had never heard anything else like it and I just love it so much to this day.

The Cure, Disintegration: I have to honestly say there has never been a record since this one that has affected me on as deep of an emotional level as Disintegration. I really can’t listen to it anymore, it is that painful. I think this record is the one that made me want to write lyrics and express myself through songs. That maybe writing music could be a catharsis for me and that beautiful things come out of great sorrow and pain. “Plainsong” and “Same Deep Water as You” are still two of my favorite Cure tracks.

The Smiths, Strangeways Here We Come: How much do I love Morrissey? Let me count the ways. This record changed me because of the sense of humor (black though it is) that came through. His fascinating way with words and unusual voice just captured me. I can be pretty sarcastic and, um, I guess a bit vindictive in my writing. I really related to the way he brought that quality into his music, particularly “Unhappy Birthday,” which I played on repeat about a million times when I got this record!

Tori Amos, Under the Pink: I stole this one from my mom. I have no idea why she even had it; I can’t imagine her listening to it. My college roommate introduced me to Tori Amos and it definitely changed my life. Again, it didn’t sound like anything I had ever heard before—I hadn’t listened to Kate Bush yet!—and it just took me to a new place. Pianos weren’t popular in rock music at the time and here it was the featured instrument! It got me excited about playing again. The way she used her voice was so emotive and raw and her writing again angry, but sensual. There’s a theme here! Add in the orchestral and classical nature of compositions like “Yes, Anastasia,” the venting of homicidal jealousy in “The Waitress” and the poking at religion in “God” and I was hooked with a capital H.

So how does it all coalesce in the work of Scarlet Season? Here’s a listen to “History of Violence” from The Taxidermist. Have a listen for yourself and see.

This Or The Apocalypse Signs with eOne Music

This or The Apocalypse

Lancaster, PA natives This Or The Apocalypse has signed a deal with eOne Music for North and South America. Says vocalist Ricky Armellino, “On behalf of This or the Apocalypse Enterprises, I’m proud to let everyone know that our new American home is located at eOne Music. Please make a note on all outgoing packages. Honestly, I couldn’t believe we would be making one signing announcement, so the third feels pretty surreal. It’s humbling and a reminder that hard work pays off.”

This will be the band’s first release since Haunt What’s Left, produced by Josh Wilbur and Lamb Of God’s own Chris Adler in 2010. The band is on tour with Norma Jean and will head over to China for a short batch of dates.

Originally releasing their debut record, Monuments, in 2007, the band has not slowed down since. With a few dozen tours under their belt alongside bands such as We Came as Romans, Periphery and Born of Osiris, the band is hardly new to the hands-on approach. Things like giving lessons while on tour and actively taking a role in their day to day is what sets This Or The Apocalypse apart.

FM Belfast Premieres New Video for “DeLorean” with IFC

FM Belfast DeLoreanIcelandic electronic group, FM Belfast, has premiered a new video for single “DeLorean” with IFC. In the video the band spares no expense of taking their fans through a journey of unforeseen territories in time and space. It’s almost as if they were taking a ride on Marty McFly’s and Doc Brown’s own DeLorean. Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson, the band’s electronics mastermind, builds synths and drummodules by himself, explaining how the song came to be after staying up all night. “I was trying to finish building my first working synthesizer that made more than just uncontrollable noises. When the synth was done I immediately had to record something. The first thing that came out is the beginning of the song.” “DeLorean” was be released as digital 7″ on June 22nd via Morr Music and follows the band’s last year’s sophomore LP, Don’t Want To Sleep LP.

One of MTV’s “International Bands To Watch” at SXSW ’11, FM Belfast Lóa Hjálmtýsdóttir and Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson formed the band in late 2005 as a studio project where they recorded songs for friends as Christmas presents. Adding two more friends to the mix, Árni Vilhjálmsson and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason (múm), these four remain the core of FM Belfast, but will often draft their friends into the performance, with as many as 25 people ending up on stage.
